Since joining St. Ignatius School District in August 1998, Stacey Doll has become an integral part of the educational community, fostering a love for learning and shaping the lives of countless students. A proud graduate of St. Ignatius High School, Stacey’s journey back to her hometown as a teacher is a testament to her commitment to both her community and the profession. She earned her teaching degree from Carroll College, and for nearly three decades, she has poured her heart into teaching at the very school that inspired her own educational journey.
Most recently, Mrs. Doll's Middle School Academic Bowl team achieved a remarkable victory, bringing home the championship and completing an entire season of undefeated wins. Her dedication to her students and the success of her team is a testament to the quality of instruction she provides. But beyond her successes in the classroom and on the competition floor, Mrs. Doll’s approach to teaching remains deeply rooted in her love for the students and the community she serves.
What Inspired Mrs. Doll to Become a Teacher?
Stacey Doll’s path to teaching began at a young age. She fondly recalls her experiences with teachers like Ms. Batiuchok, who let her create a bulletin board about Greece in sixth grade, sparking her interest in her family heritage. “That project really got me interested in learning about my background,” she shares. “Mr. Wilson, who taught me Spanish for four years, inspired me to explore languages. I ended up teaching Spanish to fourth graders for my senior project, and I knew then that teaching was something I really enjoyed.”
For Mrs. Doll, teaching has always been in her heart. “Truthfully, I’ve probably been playing school since I was a little kid,” she laughs.
The Impact of Small Class Sizes on Learning
One of the key elements that sets St. Ignatius apart is the small class sizes, something Mrs. Doll deeply appreciates. "Classes at Mission really let teachers know their students well,” she explains. “Teaching the same group of students for two years in a row helps kids receive a more individualized education.”
Mrs. Doll finds joy in knowing her students on a personal level. “I get excited when I know I’ve picked out a book or story with a specific student in mind,” she says. “I’m able to really connect with each child and cater lessons to their needs.”
Memorable Moments That Highlight the Community Spirit
Mrs. Doll values the close-knit, hometown feel that makes St. Ignatius so special. "I do love Homecoming every year," she shares. "It's always crazy, but I love Bulldog pride. Winning the Lake County Academic Bowl this year was also incredibly exciting. We were a team, and everyone in the school and town seemed to share in the excitement with us.”
It’s moments like these—where the school, students, and the greater community come together—that showcase the true essence of what makes the district so unique.
What Makes Our School Special?
One thing Mrs. Doll wants families to know is the strong sense of support within the school. "We want your kids to be happy," she says. "Our middle school team meets at least once a week to talk about students’ needs and successes. We know a lot about our kids and are quick to adjust, offering extra grace when they face family issues, illness, or learning struggles."
This individualized support is central to the school’s mission and helps create a nurturing environment where each student can thrive.
Personalizing Learning to Meet Each Student’s Needs
In the classroom, Mrs. Doll takes a personalized approach to teaching. “Giving students choices when I can is a great way to make learning more engaging,” she says. “Whether it's choosing books, writing topics, or even what kind of chair they want to sit in, these options help students feel more involved in their learning.” She also enjoys spending time talking with students about their lives, which allows her to make lessons more relatable.
Unique Traditions and Special Events
St. Ignatius School has its own set of cherished traditions, and Mrs. Doll is particularly fond of those that allow her to celebrate the achievements of her students. "I love Just Desserts in the middle school,” she smiles. “Each teacher invites two kids to have dessert and hear about the good things they’re doing in school. It’s a special time to acknowledge their hard work."
Mrs. Doll also enjoys giving out the Golden Eagle award each quarter to one student in grades 6-8. “Their parents are usually there, and the whole class gets to guess who the Golden Eagle for the quarter is. It’s such a special moment for both the student and the class."
Advice to Students
When offering advice to her students, Mrs. Doll is both humorous and heartfelt. "If I’m being funny, I tell them to use good grammar when texting someone they like," she laughs. "But more seriously, I remind them that college isn’t the only path to success. Find something you enjoy, and follow that passion. And remember, being a nerd is cool! Don’t be afraid to excel at math, reading, music, or acting."
Her passion for reading is also something she imparts to her students. "Reading is something you can do forever. And the best part? You don't have to read books you don't enjoy once you're out of school!"
The Close-Knit Community
The close-knit community at St. Ignatius School is one of the key factors that benefits both students and teachers. Mrs. Doll values the connection she shares with her students and their families. "Living in Mission, I’ve always felt supported," she says. “When I run into parents at the grocery store, they give me such positive feedback, which boosts my confidence and energy to keep working hard. When students are excited to see you outside of school, it’s a reminder that you’ve made a difference in their lives.”
Looking Ahead
As Mrs. Doll continues her teaching career at St. Ignatius, her dedication to her students, her passion for learning, and her love for the community remain as strong as ever. Her work, both inside and outside the classroom, exemplifies the values of St. Ignatius School and the spirit of Bulldog pride.
